The interaction between solid materials and their environment is a matter of the interface. This also applies to biological systems, thus the interaction between living organism and its environment.
Biological surfaces are optimized, multi-functional systems, evolved over millions of years (figure 1). They work as mechanical stabilisation, control temperature, transpiration and gas exchange.
